Course Description

This course provides lectures on the regulations regarding veterinary drugs in fish, meat and poultry, as well as, theoretical and hands-on practice of fit-for-purpose laboratory methods. Subject-matter experts from the U.S. FDA and USDA will support instructors from the University of Maryland JIFSAN both in classroom lectures and practical exercises in the laboratory. Focus will be placed on liquid chromatographic methods for the quantitative and confirmatory determination of veterinary drugs such as nitrofurans, crystal violet, leucocrystal violet, leucobrilliant green, chloramphenicol and fluoroquinolones. Participants will also become familiar with sample preparations, chromatographic separation, and detection by fluorescence and tandem mass spectrometry.
