What food safety laboratory courses are offered by JIFSAN?

The International Food Safety Training Laboratory at JIFSAN offers hands-on laboratory courses to international and domestic participants in topics related to Chemistry and Microbiology.  For a full list of the courses that we offer, check out our course catalogue or our upcoming courses pages.

Where are classes offered?

Classes are offered on-site at JIFSAN which is adjacent to the University of Maryland College Park campus.

Do you offer customized or personalized training programs?

Are you interested in hosting a training specifically to address your organizational needs?  JIFSAN offers customized laboratory courses on microbiological and chemical contaminants to meet the needs of your organization. When is the registration deadline?

Generally the registration deadline is two weeks to one month before the start date of a class, however there are a limited number of spots for each class and the classes are filled on a first come first served basis. Therefore you should complete the registration and payment process as early as possible for each class in order to reserve your spot. Registration is not considered complete until full payment is received.

Are materials (safety equipment, notepads, pens, etc.) included in the registration fee?

Safety equipment (gloves, safety goggles, and lab coats), course materials (presentations, handouts, etc.) pens, pencils and notepads are all included in the registration cost.

How do I obtain a certificate of completion?

A certificate of completion will be provided on the last day of the course.  Participants are required to take part in all classroom and laboratory activities in order to receive the certificate.

What is the cost of registration?

Do you offer any discounts?

We offer discounts to the Association for Public Health Laboratory (APHL) members, as well as group discounts (two or more persons).  Contact Dr. Janie Dubois ( or Dr. Angela Winslow ( for more information.

When is payment due?

You should complete the registration and payment process as early as possible for each class in order to reserve your spot. Registration is not considered complete until full payment is received.  Spaces are only reserved upon completion of the registration.

JIFSAN prefers credit card payments at the time of registration however other payment methods are accepted. These include but are not limited to Wire Transfers, Purchase Orders, and Checks. For more details please email us (

How do I make a payment?

To pay by credit card, you can access the link to complete your registration via the JIFSAN Course Pre-Registration email by clicking on Registration Status.  This is an auto-generated email that you will receive after registering.  If you did not receive this email, check your junk or spam folder.

International participants require screening through our Office of Research Administration before payment can be submitted.  Please allow 3-5 business days for completion of the screening process.  Your registration status will automatically change after screening is complete.

To pay by wire transfers, invoice, or check please email and indicate the name of the course, payer name, address, and email address.  Reference an invoice number or federal tax id (where applicable).

What is your cancellation policy?

Advance payment in full is required to process all registrations. If we have not received payment two weeks before the start of a course, we reserve the right to cancel your registration.

All Registration fees will be fully refunded or may be applied to a future course if a course is cancelled or postponed.

Substitutions are accepted at any time before the course starts. Please contact Dr. Janie Dubois (chemistry courses) or Dr. Angela Winslow (microbiology courses) in advance to notify us of any substitutions. There are no fees for substitutions.

What payment methods do you accept?

You can pay with any major credit card online when you register for the class. You can also make arrangements for other types of payments (check, wire transfer, etc.).  Instructions will be provided when you register.

Does the registration fee include lodging?

Lodging, airfare and ground transportation are not included in your registration fee. You are responsible for making all reservations for your accommodations during your visit. This includes airfare, hotel and rental car if necessary.  We provide suggestions to assist with your travel arrangements upon registration.

Do you provide transportation to and from the hotel?

Transportation to and from the hotel is your responsibility.  There are certain hotels in the College Park, MD area that offer free shuttle service to and from our facility.

What time do classes start and end?

The first day of class we recommend you arrive at 8:30 am to familiarize yourself with the facility and receive your class materials.  However, in general, classes begin at 9:00am and conclude at 5:00 pm.  The last day of each course is typically shorter and usually ends around lunch time.

Are there any breaks? Are meals provided?

There are breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon and these vary by class depending on the instructor and the course. Light refreshments and lunch are both provided.
